AN INTRODUCTION TO THE WORLD OF WROTE UNDER PUBLICATIONS

Hello Blog fans welcome to the wonderful world of Wrote Under. But who are these strange people I hear you cry and how did it all come to be.

It all started about five years ago. We were a bunch of poets, writer s and friends who used to see each other at various gigs and open mics, when this mad woman from Wigan with fairy wings, fluttered down and said

“I’VE HEARD YOU BRUMMIE POETS, I LIKE WHAT YOU DO. I USED TO HELP RUN A COMMUNITY PRESS, OOP NORTH. I THINK I COULD DO SOME THING SIMILAR IN BIRMINGHAM”

So dear reader, Wrote Under Publishing Co-operative was born. We had some meetings. We had some drink. We had some fights. We had some more meetings and some more drink and decided what we needed was some funding. So we asked the nice funding people but they said

“OH NO, SOME OF THOSE POETS USE UNCOUTH LANGUAGE. THIS IS NOT THE TYPE OF THING WE WISH TO PROMOTE”

So we said “FUCK ‘EM WE’LL RAISE OUR OWN DOSH”

We set up Birmingham’s premier open mic, THE SUNDAY XPRESS.

(Every 3rd Sunday of the month at the ADAM & EVE, DIGBETH)

We held raffles. We sold T-shirts. We sold Zines. We sold fairy wings. We sold CDs, DVDs, jewellery, greetings cards.  We raided our penny jars. We looked down the back of our sofas. Until, we had enough pictures of her Majesty to publish our first anthology……………

“THREE GO MAINSTREAM”
(Featuring BRENDAN HIGGINS, JAMES KENNEDY & PAUL RAFFERTY)

We took all the money from the sales, put it back in the pot and not only could we do another print run of “THREE” but we had enough to launch our next project……………….

“NINE”
(A set of short stories by LOUISE MARY STOKES)

And we’re not stopping there. So please keep tuned to this Blog for future Wrote Under happenings including latest rushes from our forthcoming film.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the revolution will be televised but for now it is available in paperback and on your computer.

Dear lovely ‘wroteunderererers’ how are you? its Sandra here from Friction – just returned from doing an extraordinary residency in South Africa which was very wonderful…. (blog on website). the reason i am writing is to say Hi to yawl and also that pete Ashton has put out a call about a piece of writing on Brum.

so Brendan I thought of you and that amazing poem of Birmingham that once graced our windows of the curio-city shop…. so please write and tell Pete about it – he’s a great chap and very passionate about our city.

meanwhile will try and make it down on the although I’ve already promised myself to Paul Murphy as he is doing a storytelling gig at the Kitchen Garden in Kings Heath…. hope you are all well – love Sandra. x

Would like to re-establish contact. Still in touch with Richard Bruce-Clay.

    Hi there,

I work for a public relations agency in London and I am drawing up a document which is to serve as a type of miniature data base. I have to research personal blogs which discus or comment on the publishing industry. We may be requiring your e-mail address in the future. Would you be alright with this? It would be very much appreciated if you could send it along.

    Kind regards,

    Clare Motte
